Marcelo Nobrega is a Professor at the University of Chicago in the Department of Human Genetics. His research focuses on mechanistically deciphering genetic variation that increases the risk of human diseases. He is particularly interested in understanding noncoding genetic variants revealed by Genome-wide Association Studies that are associated with disease etiology. The underlying assumption in his work is that a majority of these variants exert effects by altering the quantitative, temporal, and spatial properties of long-range cis-regulatory enhancers. Nobrega's laboratory is developing integrated experimental and computational strategies to tackle the challenges that hinder the mechanistic follow-up of GWAS. His research activities include various funded projects aimed at integrating genetic, omic, and immunologic studies to identify endotypes of novel drug targets for asthma and allergic diseases among other efforts. His work emphasizes identifying causal variants associated with disease traits and characterizing the regulatory properties and phenotypes associated with misregulation of target genes.
