Dr. Marcelo Thompson

Biography

Marcelo Thompson is an Assistant Professor in the Common Law Section at the Faculty of Law, University of Ottawa. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the Oxford Internet Institute at the University of Oxford, a Master of Laws in Law and Technology from the University of Ottawa, and a Bachelor of Laws and Post-Graduate Diploma in Intellectual Property Law from Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro. Before joining the University of Ottawa, he was a full-time faculty member at The University of Hong Kong, where he served as the Acting Deputy Director of the Law and Technology Centre. Thompson's research explores technology law and politics, focusing on regulatory issues related to the Internet in China, especially concerning the Social Credit System. His work has been recognized and cited by the Brazilian Supreme Court in significant legal matters. Thompson has also held key legal positions in Brazil, including serving as General Counsel for the Brazilian Information Technology Institute. He has received various research grants and awards for his outstanding contributions to the field, including the Faculty Research Output Prize at HKU.
