Biography

Marcia L. Stefanick is a Professor of Research at the Stanford Prevention Research Center in the field of Medicine. Her research primarily focuses on the prevention of chronic diseases, including heart disease, breast cancer, osteoporosis, and dementia. Dr. Stefanick is currently the Principal Investigator of the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) Extension Study and has been a key figure in the WHI Clinical Trials and Observational Study since its inception in 1994. As Chair of the WHI Steering Executive Committees from 1998 to 2011, she has held significant leadership roles. Her recent work includes the WHI Strong Healthy (WHISH) Trial, which tests a DHHS-based physical activity intervention on a diverse cohort of 24,000 participants aged 68-99. She also leads the Osteoporotic Study of Men (MrOS) and has a strong commitment to research and teaching on sex, gender differences, and human physiology related to health outcomes. Dr. Stefanick has received numerous awards, including being a Fellow of the American Heart Association and American College of Sports Medicine. She has played a decisive role in promoting Women's Health and Sex Differences in Medicine at Stanford University, contributing significantly to the academic and research community over her lengthy career.
