Biography

Marco Bünte is a full professor of Political Science at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg since September 2019. Previously, he served as Associate Professor and Director of Research at the School of Arts and Social Sciences at the Monash University Malaysia campus for six years. His academic career includes a decade as a Senior Research Fellow at the Asia Institute of the German Institute of Global and Area Studies (GIGA) in Hamburg. Bünte has taught at various universities including Hamburg, Helsinki, Göttingen, Kiel, Kuala Lumpur, and Rostock, and has been a visiting scholar at institutions such as City University Hong Kong and Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok. He specializes in the study of democracy, authoritarianism, civil-military relations, and human rights in the context of East and Southeast Asia. Bünte has been a principal investigator on several research projects funded by the EU Horizon 2020 program and has contributed extensively to the academic literature with numerous publications on political regimes, governance, and social movements in the region.
