Dr. Marco Giometto

Biography

Marco G. Giometto is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics at Columbia University. He received his BS and MS degrees from the University of Padua, and earned his PhD from Braunschweig TU University in 2014, followed by another PhD from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in 2016. He is a recipient of the EPFL EDME Award for his outstanding thesis in mechanical engineering. Since joining Columbia University in 2018, he has held postdoctoral positions at the University of British Columbia and at the Center for Turbulence Research, jointly operated by Stanford University and NASA Ames. His research focuses on the fundamental study of turbulence through the use of highly scalable parallel algorithms and big data. The goal of his work is to advance our current understanding of turbulent transport in engineering and environmental systems, whilst developing new reduced-order physical models for interdisciplinary applications, including large-scale computations for practical engineering flows. The insights derived from his research have implications across various fields such as geophysics, engineering, biology, energy technologies, and heat and mass transfer, with a focus on evaporation and skin friction, ultimately contributing to the optimization of system performance and reducing environmental impact.
