Professor Dr. Marco Hoozemans

Biography

Marco Hoozemans is an Associate Professor in Human Movement Sciences at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His research focuses on biomechanics and human movement, with particular interest in movement patterns, loads, and variability related to health, performance, and rehabilitation. He investigates upper and lower extremity function across a broad range of contexts, including sports performance and daily life mobility. His work covers applications in overhead sports such as baseball and tennis, wheelchair basketball, occupational activities, and clinical rehabilitation settings. Additionally, he studies mobility in older adults and patients with orthopedic conditions to understand gait, fall risk, and recovery for functional independence. Hoozemans emphasizes the use of wearable sensors, motion capture, and computational methods to objectively measure and analyze movement under laboratory and real-life conditions. He contributes to teaching in research methodology, epidemiology, and statistics, and supervises MSc and PhD students to prepare them to become independent critical researchers, which is an integral part of his academic role.
