Dr. Marco Mostert

Biography

Marco Mostert is a Professor of Medieval History at Utrecht University. His research focuses on the social communication of the Middle Ages, emphasizing the relationships among non-verbal, oral, and written forms of communication. He explores pertinent questions about the intellectuals of the early Middle Ages and the history of medieval libraries, particularly how medieval Latin texts were transmitted. Mostert is also interested in understanding how various forms of communication were utilized by religious and intellectual elites, as well as the usage of writing by different societal groups, including town dwellers, rural inhabitants, and marginalized communities. His work highlights the parallels between historical communication issues and similar challenges faced in contemporary society, such as the integration of newcomers and migrants, and the impact of language and writing in these interactions. He is involved in the 'Pionier project' on Medieval Literacy and contributes to the Medieval Literacy Platform.
