Dr. Marco Schutten

Biography

Marco Schutten is an Associate Professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Business Information Systems at the University of Twente in the Netherlands, where he serves as Programme Director for bachelor and master programmes in Industrial Engineering Management. He holds a Master of Science in Applied Mathematics obtained in 1992 and a Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from the University of Twente, awarded in 1996. His research interests focus on various aspects of planning and scheduling in industrial environments, notably in transportation planning, project management, and production scheduling. One of his particular interests lies in synchromodal freight transportation and urban logistics, where he explores innovative solutions to improve efficiency and effectiveness in the logistics sector. He has previously worked as a Senior Consultant at ORTEC bv until 2006, contributing to the development of algorithms and heuristics for complex logistical challenges. Schutten is also known for his work in education, teaching courses on heuristic methods, discrete optimization, and advanced production planning at various academic levels. His numerous publications in esteemed journals reflect his extensive experience and expertise in the field, making him a key contributor to ongoing discussions about advancements in supply chain management and operations research.
