Biography

Professor du Sautoy has been involved in science at Oxford since arriving as a mathematics undergraduate in 1983. He is a member of the University’s Mathematical Institute and is a Senior Media Fellow at the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. In October 2008, he was appointed the Charles Simonyi Chair in Public Understanding of Science, a position he holds jointly between the Department of Continuing Education and the Mathematical Institute. Throughout his career, he has garnered numerous accolades for his contributions to mathematics, including the prestigious Berwick Prize from the London Mathematical Society in 2001. In December 2006, he delivered the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures titled ‘The Num8er My5teries’. Professor du Sautoy has also presented a four-part television series, ‘The Story of Maths’ on BBC4 to popularise mathematics. He writes regularly for The Guardian and The Daily Telegraph and has authored many academic and popular books, including the bestseller ‘The Music of Primes’. His latest publication, ‘Finding Moonshine: A Mathematician's Journey Through Symmetry’, was released in February 2008. Professor du Sautoy is known for his commitment to engaging the public in mathematics through various media and educational initiatives.
