Biography

Marcus Jack is a writer, curator, and Lecturer in Contemporary Art Theory at the University of Edinburgh. His research focuses on counternarratives within visual culture, examining aspects such as infrastructure, statehood, socio-economics, and marginality, with a particular emphasis on artists’ film and video. He previously held academic positions at the University of Exeter as a Lecturer in Contemporary Art Curation and was an AHRC Postdoctoral Fellow at the Glasgow School of Art. Jack has also been a visiting researcher on the Archive/Counter-Archive project at York University in Toronto. He convened the British Art Network’s annual flagship conference in 2023, aiming to propose a devolutionary methodology for understanding the recent history of art within institutions. His writing has been featured in several outlets including Glasgow International, Hunterian, ICA London, LUX Scotland, and MAP Magazine. Jack is currently developing a full-length monograph on the history of artists’ film in Scotland, set to be published by Edinburgh University Press. His recent curatorial projects include DOWSER, an open-access serial on new writing archival republication that confronts the histories and futures of the artists’ moving image in Scotland, and CINEMA, a three-day festival at Tramway, Glasgow, that showcased the work of 29 artists and filmmakers. He has served as Programme Lead for the Scottish Contemporary Art Network and is the founder of Transit Arts, focusing on developing screening programmes for arts organisations and film festivals across the UK.
