Biography

Marcus Newton is an Associate Professor at the University of Southampton and leads the Coherent X-ray Science Group. His research centers on the study of quantum materials at the nanoscale, including multiferroic materials and the development of energy-efficient integrated devices. He has pioneered the use of Bragg coherent diffraction imaging (BCDI) techniques to investigate these materials, utilizing cutting-edge synchrotron science technologies. Newton plays a key role in the development of coherent diffraction imaging techniques at the Diamond Light Source. Additionally, he has years of experience in teaching undergraduate courses such as 'Crystalline Solids', 'Applied Nuclear Physics', and 'Computer Techniques in Physics'. He is co-author of the textbook 'Introductory Solid State Physics' published by Taylor & Francis and has developed the Interactive Phase Retrieval Suite, a software tool for real-time visualization and reconstruction of phase information from Bragg CDI data. His work significantly enhances data analysis efficiency and usability for scientists using synchrotron facilities. In 2023, he was recognized as a Fellow of the Institute of Physics.
