Biography

Marcus Twellmann has been a professor of Modern German Literature at the University of Hamburg since the winter semester of 2021. He studied literary studies in Bielefeld, Paris, and New York, completing his undergraduate and master's degrees. Between 2000 and 2003, he was a doctoral candidate at the DFG Graduate School 'Representation, Rhetoric, Knowledge' at the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt/Oder, where he wrote his dissertation titled 'The Drama of Sovereignty.' He later worked as a research assistant at the Institute of German Studies at the University of Bonn and as a guest lecturer at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. In 2009, he obtained his habilitation in Bonn with a work on Enlightenment critiques in Prussia. He has held various academic positions, including leading a research center at the University of Konstanz and coordinating interdisciplinary projects. His research interests include literature and cultural theory, Modern German Literature in a global context, and literature’s relationship with nature.
