Biography

Mardia Bishop holds an M.A. and Ph.D. from Ohio State University and a B.A. from Thomas College. Currently, she serves as a Teaching Professor and the Director of Public Speaking Instruction in the Department of Communication at the University of Illinois. Bishop teaches courses in storytelling, listening, and business professional communication and supervises graduate teaching assistants in pedagogy. She has consistently been recognized on the Faculty Ranked Excellent List for her teaching excellence. In her consulting work, she has developed and facilitated numerous interactive workshops focusing on Belonging, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, as well as techniques for Active Listening, Conflict Management, and Mindfulness Practices for Leaders. She was a recipient of the 2021 Health Make-A-Thon award from Carle Illinois College of Medicine and the 2022 Jump ARCHES Provost’s Call-to-Action grant, funding innovative virtual reality-based cultural competency training for medical students. Bishop has presented at multiple conferences addressing microaggressions, mediation communication, and the mindful practices of public speaking.
