Biography

Margaret M. Chou, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology Laboratory Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research focuses on the mechanisms underlying malignant transformation, particularly in bone soft tissue tumors (BSTTs) and other sarcomas. Chou aims to understand the changes that occur within normal cells as they transition to a cancerous state, including alterations in proliferation, survival, and motility. Her research is particularly concerned with pediatric BSTTs, which are driven by specific chromosomal translocations. Notably, the TRE17/USP6 oncogene has been identified as a critical factor in several BSTT types. Her laboratory is dedicated to elucidating the molecular pathways influenced by TRE17 and other agents that contribute to tumor pathogenesis, with the ultimate goal of developing novel therapeutic strategies. Chou’s laboratory also investigates the mechanisms of various sarcomas, including Ewing sarcoma and alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, focusing on their respective pathognomonic translocations and identifying sensitivities to cytotoxic agents.
