Dr. Margaret Foster

Biography

Margaret Foster is an Associate Professor in the Department of Classical Studies at the University of Michigan, where she specializes in Greek literature, particularly archaic and classical poetry, and Greek cultural history. She obtained her Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2010, where she also completed her M.A. in 2003. Her current research focuses on cultural history and comprises a critical examination of archaic and early classical Greek poetry. Her book, 'Seer City: Religion, Politics, Colonial Ideology in Ancient Greece' (University of California Press, 2018), explores the ideological conflicts and forms of oracular power in ancient Greece through a cultural poetics framework. In 2019, she co-edited 'Genre in Archaic and Classical Greek Poetry: Theories and Models' with Leslie Kurke and Naomi Weiss, which presents innovative approaches to understanding Greek poetry and its performance. Foster is also working on a monograph that addresses the politics and polemics within fifth-century lyric poetry and its dialogue with Attic tragedy.
