Biography

Margaret L. Gardel is the Edward L. Ryerson Distinguished Service Professor at the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago, with a joint appointment in the Department of Physics and the College. She joined the Department of Physics in 2007 after completing her PhD at Harvard University in 2004 and postdoctoral research at MIT and the Scripps Research Institute. Her research focuses on Cell Tissue Mechanics, Polymer Physics, and Cell Adhesion and Migration, particularly investigating how biological molecules can be harnessed to build soft materials that enable physiological processes such as adhesion, migration, and shape change. Gardel is recognized for her significant contributions to the field, having received awards including the Packard Fellowship, Sloan Fellowship, and NIH Pioneer Award. In 2013, she was named a Fellow of the American Physical Society. Her laboratory utilizes both top engineering and biophysical methods to study the mechanics of epithelial cells, aiming to understand how synthetic constructs can be developed to reconstitute these biological processes.
