Biography

Margaret Insley earned her BA in Economics from the University of Calgary and an MA from the University of Alberta. After completing her Master’s degree in the early 1980s, she worked for six years as an economist at an energy company called Nova, Alberta Corporation. In the late 1980s, she moved to Waterloo and began her PhD studies in economics at the University of Guelph, specializing in the economics of natural resources and the environment. Her thesis research examined optimal decision-making under uncertainty in the context of groundwater resource protection. In 1996, she received her PhD and, in 2002, accepted a faculty position in the Economics Department at the University of Waterloo. She taught undergraduate and graduate courses on natural resource economics and decision-making under uncertainty, and supervised numerous PhD students. Insley served as the Chair of the Department from 2011 to 2019 and retired in 2023, currently holding an appointed position as an adjunct professor in the Department.
