Biography

Margaret E. Kruk is an Adjunct Professor at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, specializing in Health Systems and Global Health. Her research focuses on generating evidence to improve health systems for populations living in low-income countries. Collaborating with colleagues in Ethiopia, Kenya, Nepal, South Africa, and India, she develops novel measures of health system quality and investigates the relationship between health care quality, population demand, and health outcomes. Dr. Kruk's team employs implementation science and econometric methods to evaluate large-scale health system reforms. As the Director of the QuEST Centers Network, she fosters a multi-country collaboration aimed at producing a global evidence base for enhancing health systems. The QuEST Network is a response to the findings of the Lancet Global Health Commission on High Quality Health Systems in the Sustainable Development Goal Era, chaired by Dr. Kruk. The network works on developing new instruments to assess health system quality and testing policy solutions for systemic quality deficits, promoting high-impact health systems research in partner countries. Before joining Harvard, she served as an Associate Professor of Health Policy Management and Director of the Health Systems Initiative at Columbia University, and as an Assistant Professor of Health Management and Policy at the University of Michigan. Dr. Kruk has also held positions with the United Nations Development Program and McKinsey & Company, and practiced medicine in northern Ontario, Canada. She holds an MD from McMaster University and an MPH from Harvard University.
