Biography

Margaret Purden completed her undergraduate doctoral studies in nursing at McGill University and is currently an Associate Professor at the Ingram School of Nursing. She serves as the Scientific Director of the Jewish General Hospital's Centre for Nursing Research and has been the Director of the Office of Interprofessional Education at McGill University's Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences since 2016. Dr. Purden has significantly contributed to the field of Interprofessional Education (IPE) and Interprofessional Practice (IPP), with extensive research in cardiovascular nursing. Between 2013 and 2019, she established the Office of Interprofessional Education, providing critical infrastructure support to promote the advancement of interprofessional education and scholarly work. The program she oversees delivers an IPE curriculum to 1,800 students annually, engaging 200 academic and clinical faculty. Furthermore, she co-chairs the Graduate Education Committee of the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN), playing a pivotal role in the development of national standards for master's and doctoral nursing programs. Dr. Purden is also an executive member of the Steering Committee for the Jewish General Hospital Nursing Collaborative, which promotes initiatives to enhance clinical practice and scholarly work across the McGill Nursing network. Her current research interests are geared toward improving quality care within the health care context, including intervention studies to manage pain in collaboration with ICUs, along with observational research to understand nursing handoffs and patients' risk of deterioration, as well as qualitative investigations into the perceptions of patients, families, and health care providers regarding ICU care during the COVID pandemic.
