Biography

Dr. Rice's NIH-funded laboratory studies factors that regulate the release of dopamine, a key transmitter in motor reward pathways in the brain. Current research topics include the modulation of dopamine release in the striatum by dietary and metabolic hormones such as insulin and leptin, the influence of exercise on dopamine levels and release, as well as the effects of Parkinson's-related protein, alpha-synuclein, on the physiology of dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra. The methods employed in her research include fast-scan cyclic voltammetry, optogenetics, patch-clamp recordings from basal ganglia neurons, and immunohistochemistry. Dr. Rice is an investigator at the Neuroscience Institute and a member of the Marlene and Paolo Fresco Institute for Parkinson's and Movement Disorders at NYU Langone, where she also serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Parkinson's Foundation.
