Biography

Margareta Ingrid Christian is an Associate Professor in the Department of Germanic Studies at the University of Chicago. She earned her Ph.D. from Princeton University in 2012. Her scholarly work integrates literature and art with a focus on the relationship between cultural disciplines. Christian's book, 'Objects Air: Artworks and 1900' (University of Chicago Press, 2021) received the DAAD/GSA Book Prize in 2022 and the Gordon J. Laing Prize in 2024 for distinguished contributions by a faculty member at the University of Chicago Press. Her research interests encompass Literature, Art Writing, Art Historiography, Aesthetics, Poetry, Environmental Humanities, and Dance. With a background in Romania, she pursued her undergraduate studies at Harvard and has spent considerable time studying in Berlin. She has been awarded fellowships from the DAAD and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Her teaching includes courses on 20th-century aesthetic ecologies, focusing on significant cultural figures and movements.
