Dr. Margaretha Wewerinke Singh

Biography

Margaretha Wewerinke-Singh is an Associate Professor of Sustainability Law at the University of Amsterdam and a co-founder of SEVEN, the university's climate institute. With a focus on public international law, international environmental law, and human rights, she has authored significant publications, including 'State Responsibility, Climate Change and Human Rights in International Law' and co-edited 'Environmental Law and Governance in the Pacific: Climate Change, Biodiversity and Communities.' Margaretha has previously served as an Assistant Professor at Leiden University and coordinated the University of the South Pacific's Environmental Law programme in Vanuatu. She has held visiting positions at prestigious institutions, including the University of Cambridge's Lauterpacht Centre for International Law. Her research addresses the role of law in transitioning to sustainable societies, specializing in human rights and social justice. Margaretha's extensive involvement in international climate negotiations has positioned her as a legal advisor for various governments, NGOs, and intergovernmental organizations, including the United Nations. She holds a PhD from the European University Institute and multiple degrees in law and philosophy from Nottingham Law School and Radboud University. In addition, she is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Fiji and serves on several advisory boards related to environmental law.
