Biography

Margo Natalie Crawford is the Edmund J. and Louise W. Kahn Professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania and the Director of the Center for Africana Studies. She received her Ph.D. from Yale University’s American Studies Program. As a scholar of 20th and 21st century African American literature, visual culture, and global black studies, Crawford’s work spans the intersections of literary and visual art, cultural movements, and scholarship. Her research interests include performance studies, comparative ethnic studies, radical black feminism, and theories of the black diaspora. Crawford is the author of 'Black Post-Blackness: Black Arts Movement and Twenty-First Century Aesthetics' (2017), which compares the black avant-garde of the 1960s and 70s with contemporary black aesthetics. Additionally, she authored 'Dilution Anxiety: The Black Phallus' (2008) and co-edited 'New Thoughts on the Black Arts Movement and Global Black Consciousness'. Her essays have been published in numerous academic journals and collections. Her latest book, 'African American Literature?', was published in 2021, and she is set to release a co-edited volume on Hortense Spillers in 2024.
