Biography

Margot Jackson is a Professor of Sociology and the Director of the Population Studies and Training Center at Brown University. Her research focuses on the study of poverty and inequality among U.S. children and families, particularly examining the role of the social safety net in shaping family behaviors and welfare. Her work has been published in leading journals such as the American Sociological Review, Social Forces, Demography, and Social Science Medicine, and has been funded by prestigious organizations including the National Institutes of Health, the Russell Sage Foundation, and the Spencer Foundation. Jackson received her Bachelor’s degree from Brown University and her PhD in Sociology from UCLA. She is currently engaged in research aimed at understanding how public sector investments and policies can narrow inequalities affecting children and families. Collaborations with the Urban Institute have resulted in the creation of a longitudinal, state-level database that measures government spending on children across 25 major programs in education, health, income support, and housing from 1997 to 2022. This data aids in assessing the impact of public investments on the well-being of children and the resources parents allocate to their children.
