Mari Jarris is Assistant Professor in the Department of German Studies and affiliated faculty in the Feminist, Gender & Sexuality Studies Program. Trained in comparative literature, her work spans German and Russian language literature theory, primarily during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Her research focuses on feminist and queer theory, transnational socialisms, utopian literature, psychoanalysis, and Critical Theory. Jarris has previously taught at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Middlebury’s German School, South Woods State Prison in New Jersey, and Princeton University. Her current book manuscript, 'Utopia Revolution: Marxism’s Queer Pasts Futures', theorizes queerness in the context of revolution, offering a counternarrative to the dominance of scientific socialism by recovering queer utopias within transnational German, Russian, and French socialist movements. She conceptualizes the expansion of the Marxist archive to include visions of polyamory, androgyny, family abolition, and the socialization of care. Jarris's research has been supported by the Fulbright Commission, American Councils, German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and the Women in German Coalition. Alongside Dorothea Walzer, she is editing and translating a collection of Lu Märten’s writings titled 'Classless Forms: Lu Märten Reader', to be published by Cornell University Press. Additionally, she co-organizes the Marxism Working Group and serves on the editorial board of 'Diacritics Signale'.
