Dr. Mari Paananen

Biography

Mari Paananen is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg since October 2017. Previously, she served as an Associate Professor in Accounting at the University of Exeter. Paananen earned her PhD from the University of North Texas and has mainly worked in the United Kingdom prior to her current role. Her research focuses on the capital market effects related to corporate communications, such as financial reporting and sustainability disclosures, employing computerized text analysis techniques. Her interests encompass capital market effects of information exchange and corporate disclosure practices, especially concerning financial sustainability reporting. She contributes to understanding the valuation of environmental liabilities and costs associated with land-based oil and gas extraction. Additionally, she explores issues such as machine learning in corporate credit risk assessments and the impacts of accrual manipulation on corporate practices. Paananen has taught various courses in financial accounting, financial statement analysis, and data analysis, and has multiple publications in notable academic journals that delve into various facets of accounting and financial reporting.
