Biography

Mari van Emmerik is a Research Associate at the Faculty of Divinity, University of Cambridge, where she co-leads a project funded by the John Templeton Foundation titled "Awe-some Spirituality: Theological Psychological Exploration of Awe Underlying Spiritual Yearning Nonreligious." Her work examines the universal human experience of awe, bridging secular and religious spirituality, and reveals the nature of spiritual longing. Mari completed her doctorate at the University of Oxford in 2022, under the supervision of Professor Alister McGrath. She has an interdisciplinary academic background that includes postgraduate degrees in Cognitive Science, Linguistics, and the Science of Religion, and she has also been recognized as a Fulbright Scholar in the United States and a Clarendon Scholar at Oxford. Mari has taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Theology and Science at Cambridge from 2022 to 2024 and actively contributes to public discourse on the intersection of religion and science.
