Professor Dr. Maria Boletsi

Biography

Maria Boletsi is the Marilena Laskaridis Chair in Modern Greek Studies at the University of Amsterdam, where she focuses on comparative literature, literary and cultural theory, and modern Greek literature. She explores the intersections of literature and societal issues, particularly around themes of othering, cultural identity, and the politics of crises. Her recent work investigates the concept of 'weird turn' in literature and art. She completed her Ph.D. at Leiden University and has been a research fellow at several prestigious institutes. Boletsi is known for her contributions to the understanding of barbarism in contemporary discourse and has published extensively on the works of Greek poet C.P. Cavafy. Her publications include the monograph "Specters of Cavafy" and the co-authored volumes on barbarism and crisis narratives. She co-coordinates various research networks and is an active member of editorial boards in the field of Modern Greek Studies.
