Biography

Maria Carbonetti is a Lecturer in the Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies at the University of British Columbia. She obtained her Licenciatura en Letras from the National University of South in Argentina and completed her PhD focusing on Hispanic Studies at UBC. Her dissertation, titled “Distinción y Periferia en el Discurso de la Prensa Ilustrada: Ultra (1916-1930),” investigates the discourse of the Ultra press, a cultural and social magazine that targeted the Argentine aristocratic elite during the early 20th century. Her research explores cultural consumption practices and the role of such magazines as tools of mass communication, shedding light on the socio-political dynamics at play. Maria teaches intermediate and advanced Spanish language courses and coordinates community-based service-learning initiatives that bridge engagement with the Hispanic community in Metro Vancouver. Her research interests include Linguistics, Language Teaching and Learning, Community Engaged Learning, Cultural Studies, and Gender Studies. Maria has published several articles in academic journals and contributed to discussions on topics of cultural representation and language use in contemporary contexts.
