Biography

Maria Charalambides is a Professor in the Mechanics Materials Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London. She heads the Soft Solids Research group and has held several academic positions including Imperial Lecturer and Research Associate Senior Scientist at the National Physical Laboratory. Her research focuses on material modeling and mechanical characterization of soft polymeric solids, particularly in the context of foods, while also exploring micromechanics of particulate-filled polymeric composites and cellular structures. She has developed experimental and numerical models for industrial food processes, including rolling, extrusion, and cutting, and has worked on inverse indentation methods for characterizing polymers and understanding the fracture and deformation of paint and adhesive coatings. With over 100 published papers, she has received significant funding from industry and Research Councils UK (RCUK). Maria has been recognized in various awards, including being a finalist for the 2013 Cahn Prize and winning the IMechE Food Engineer Awards in both 2007 and 2011. She also serves on committees for the British Society of Rheology and the Food Drink Technical Committee of IMechE.
