Biography

Maria Christou joined the Department of English, American Studies and Creative Writing at the University of Manchester in 2018. She is currently working on a Leverhulme Research Fellowship that will culminate in a monograph entitled 'Calculating Future: Aesthetics Prediction'. The book explores how the concept of the future has been redefined in the twentieth century, particularly as it relates to technologies that allow for the calculable prediction of outcomes. Her other work, 'Eating Otherwise: Philosophy Food Twentieth-Century Literature', investigates the ways twentieth-century literature engages with the act of eating, analyzing how modernist and postmodernist writers portray the human subject's capability to induce change in the material world. She has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and chapters addressing the intersections of food with philosophy, religion, and science, as well as explorations of spy fiction. Christou has led projects funded by the British Academy and is interested in supervising PhD proposals in areas such as autofiction, contemporary literature, food studies, and futures studies.
