Biography

María Cristina Cuervo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Spanish & Portuguese and the Department of Linguistics at the University of Toronto. Her research focuses on linguistic theory, particularly in the areas of syntax, morphology, and argument structure. Cuervo has published articles in renowned journals such as Syntax, Probus, Lingua, and Theoretical Linguistics, among others. She edited the volume 'End Argument Structure?' published by Emerald in 2012. Her work has been supported by various grants from Victoria College and the Jackman Research Fellowship. In 2013, she received the Outstanding Teaching Award from the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto. Her research examines specific grammatical phenomena across languages and considers how these phenomena can inform broader questions regarding the structural properties of language and their impact on linguistic meaning. Cuervo utilizes a variety of natural language data sources, including speaker intuitions, corpora, and experimental data involving both children and adult language learners. Her work contributes to our understanding of the cognitive faculties that underpin human language use.
