Biography

Maria Engström is a Professor in the Department of Modern Languages and the Director of Russian Studies at Uppsala University. Her research focuses on the Russian neoconservative intellectual milieu, imperial aesthetics, contemporary literature, art, late Soviet underground 'occulture', and the post-Soviet utopian imagination. Currently, she is the Principal Investigator for a project titled 'No(w)stalgia Modernity: Neo-Soviet Myth in Contemporary Russian Culture,' funded by the Swedish Research Council from 2020 to 2024. This project aims to elucidate the neo-Soviet myth and its impact on the formation of a new 'post-post-Soviet' identity in contemporary Russia. Engström is also involved in a collaborative project on queer visual culture in post-Soviet Russia, which investigates how queer visibility has been appropriated and suppressed. Through her interdisciplinary approach, she aims to analyze the relationship between visual arts and broader socio-political issues in contemporary Russian society.
