Biography

María Fernández is an Associate Professor in the Department of History of Art and Visual Studies at Cornell University. She specializes in the history and theory of digital art, cybernetics in art from the late 1950s to the 1960s, and feminist media arts. Her notable publications include "Cosmopolitanism in Mexican Visual Culture" (University of Texas Press, 2014), which examines the negotiation of local and global influences in Mexican art, and "Domain Errors: Cyberfeminist Practices" (Autonomedia, 2002), an edited volume focusing on the second-wave cyberfeminism. Fernández's research also explores the contributions of women artists in new media and the implications of posthumanism and new materialism in contemporary art practices. In addition, she has contributed essays to multiple journals including Leonardo and Art Journal and is currently writing a book on the work of British cybernetician Gordon Pask. Her scholarly work is recognized in the field and has led to various awards, including the Arvey Book Award from the Association for Latin American Art in 2015. Fernández is actively involved in supervising independent study and honors work within her department, engaging with potential advisees to guide their academic pursuits.
