Dr. Maria Lepowsky

Biography

Maria Lepowsky is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, obtained in 1981. Since joining the faculty at UW-Madison in the same year, she has focused on various research areas including cultural anthropology and medical anthropology, particularly in the context of Oceania. Her extensive research interests encompass gender studies, historical anthropology, environmental anthropology, and the study of exchange and ritual practices. Lepowsky's work also delves into psychological anthropology, contributing to the understanding of history within anthropological contexts. She is associated with multiple research endeavors that emphasize the cultures of New Guinea, Native California, and the American West, establishing her as a leading figure in her fields of expertise.
