Born in Seville, Spain, Maria Jose Martinez Bravo saw her participation in helping sick people recover and decided to study Pharmacy. She started her PhD focused on the latest scientific advances and wanted to gain experience in international labs which led her to accept a two-year postdoctoral offer at the Karolinska Institute.
