Biography

Maria Medalla is an Associate Professor at Boston University in the Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine. Her research focuses on understanding the biophysical synaptic properties of neurons in prefrontal cortical networks using a combination of cellular electrophysiological methods and multi-scale anatomic techniques. She employs patch-clamp recording, pathway tracing, and various microscopy methods to study different cortical areas and their contribution to attention, emotion, and action transformation, with a special focus on the medial prefrontal cortex and anterior cingulate cortex in non-human primates. Medalla's research is particularly interested in how these networks are affected in disorders such as depression and anxiety, and how they can be modeled to understand cognitive aging. She has been involved in multiple NIH-funded projects examining the circuit dynamics within prefrontal-limbic networks and the mechanisms underlying neural circuitry plasticity in aging monkeys.
