Biography

Maria Rosaria Pandolfi has been a professor of anthropology at the Université de Montréal since 1994. Her research focuses on critical boundaries in anthropology, including the comparison of cultural theories between Italian Gramscian anthropology and North American interpretative and post-interpretative anthropology. She has also explored the anthropology of contemporary worlds, investigating new categories of social analysis. Her work on the anthropology of the body addresses body and power dynamics, control strategies, and the influence of new technologies. Additionally, her research interests encompass political anthropology, particularly in relation to the European enlargement, East-West polarization, new identity geographies, and traumatic experiences in post-communist Balkans. Pandolfi has extensive field experience in post-communist territories, especially in Albania, Bosnia, and Kosovo, and has acted as an expert on conflicts, humanitarian interventions, and migration for international organizations. Since 2000, she has co-directed the Research Group on Military and Humanitarian Interventions (GRIMH) at her university and is a member of the IRTG Diversity research group and the Interdisciplinary Institute of Contemporary Anthropology in Paris. A dedicated educator, she leads seminars focusing on the intersection of politics and music and collaborates with various cultural festivals.
