Biography

Maria Paola Pofi is a Guest Teacher at the Department of Media and Communications at London School of Economics and Political Science. She recently completed her PhD at King’s College London, funded by the London Arts and Humanities Partnership, in July 2023. Her doctoral thesis, entitled 'Postfeminist Subjectivities and Borders: Italian-Bangladeshi Muslim Young Women’s Self-Representations in Digital Media Culture', investigates how second-generation South Asian Muslim women living in Europe, particularly in Italy and the UK, negotiate their identities through visual representations on social networking profiles. Paola’s research examines gender performativity through postfeminist neoliberal tendencies, alongside the intersectional positioning of lived experiences in relation to racial, ethnic, and religious minority status in Europe. Currently, she is adapting her thesis into journal articles for publication. Paola holds an MSc in Media and Communications from LSE and a Bachelor's Degree in Social and Political Communications from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan. Her research interests cover gender and identity in media, migration and mobility, media culture, diversity and inequality, as well as media representations and audiences.
