Biography

Maria Rubins was born in Saint Petersburg (formerly Leningrad). She studied at St. Petersburg State University in Russia, Brown University in the United States, and Charles University in Prague, earning her doctoral degree. She has lived in Boston, New York, Houston, and Washington, where she has taught Russian literature, culture, and language at American universities. In 2004, she moved to Europe and joined the School of Slavonic and East European Studies at University College London. Rubins has served as editor of the BRILL book series 'Studies in Slavic Literature and Poetics' and is a member of the editorial boards of several academic journals, including the Slavonic and East European Review and New Review. She has been an honorary associate member of the Centre d’Études sur la Russie, le Caucase et l’Europe Centrale in France and participates in various international learned societies. Her research has earned several grants and fellowships, including those from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the British Academy. In addition to her academic pursuits, she works as a literary translator, translating from English, French, Hebrew, and Russian, and has edited and translated novels and memoirs. Rubins was nominated for UCL Student Choice awards for 'Outstanding Teaching' and 'Outstanding Support Teaching.'
