Biography

Maria Sanz is a Reader in Physical Chemistry at King’s College London. She obtained her PhD from the University of Valladolid, focusing on weakly-bound complexes under the supervision of Professors Juan Carlos López and José Luis Alonso. After her doctoral studies, she joined Harvard University as a postdoctoral fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, where she worked under the guidance of Professor Patrick Thaddeus on molecules of astrophysical interest. Maria returned to Spain as a Ramon y Cajal Fellow and was later appointed a Profesor Titular before moving to King's College London. She currently leads her own research group, concentrating on areas including conformational structural determination, non-covalent interactions, and molecular recognition. Her work on atmospheric processes, particularly the initial stages of atmospheric nucleation, is critical for understanding gas-phase interactions. She utilizes broadband rotational spectroscopy to gain unprecedented structural insights, reinforced by quantum-chemistry calculations. In addition to her research, Maria is actively involved in teaching various undergraduate and postgraduate chemistry courses.
