Biography

Maria Spinato was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, and graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College at Guelph with a DVM degree. She completed the Doctor of Veterinary Science program specializing in anatomic pathology at OVC. Maria moved west to take a position as a diagnostic veterinary pathologist with the Saskatchewan Provincial Veterinary Laboratory in Regina, where she successfully passed the American College of Veterinary Pathologists board certification examination. In 1999, she served as the Laboratory Manager in Regina when the lab became part of Saskatchewan’s Prairie Diagnostic Services. Subsequently, she worked as a pathologist and Laboratory Manager, then as the Assistant Chief Veterinary Officer at the Animal Health Centre of the BC Ministry of Agriculture and Lands, before joining the Animal Health Laboratory in Guelph in 2007, where she serves as a mammalian pathologist and Supervisor of the Postmortem Laboratory. Maria has strong interests in quality assurance, being a Standards Council Canada ISO/IEC 17025 Accredited Technical Assessor and specializing in pathology and emergency laboratory management. She is a member of the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD), serving on the Accreditation Committee and co-chairing the Pathology Committee. In her free time, Maria enjoys yoga, reading, and gardening.
