Biography

Maria Thom is a Professor of Neuropathology at University College London. She graduated in medicine from Guy’s Hospital, London in 1989 and began her training in General Histopathology at St Mary’s Hospital London under Professor David Evans in 1993. She became a lecturer in neuropathology at Queen Square in 1994 and was appointed as a consultant in Neuropathology in 1996 after qualifying for the MRCPath in 1995. A fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists since 2003, she has contributed to the field significantly with written autopsy guidelines for college epilepsy deaths in 2006 and revised them in 2019. Thom has also co-authored essential datasets for reporting on CNS tumours and non-neoplastic lesions. Her involvement in the International League Against Epilepsy includes being part of various task forces focusing on developing international neuropathology classification guidelines for epilepsy. She serves on the editorial board of Neuropathology Applied Neurobiology and has been involved with multiple research tissue banks, emphasizing her commitment to epilepsy research. Currently, her research focuses on degenerative disease processes associated with epilepsy.
