Maria Truesdale is a researcher in the field of intellectual disabilities. She moved to Scotland in 2016, taking a post as a lecturer in intellectual disabilities at Edinburgh Napier University before joining the University of Glasgow in 2019 as a senior lecturer. Her multi-disciplinary, internationally recognized research program focuses on tackling health inequalities faced by people with intellectual disabilities. Currently, she is the Solution Focused Research Theme Lead at the Scottish Learning Disabilities Observatory, with a goal to improve the physical and mental health and well-being of people with intellectual disabilities and their carers through the evaluation, development, and testing of complex interventions using gold standard methodologies that include research studies. Maria has conducted several trials using complex interventions to improve the physical and mental health of individuals with intellectual disabilities, playing a central role in developing a randomised control trial for the clinical cost-effectiveness of the DESMOND-ID structured education programme for adults with intellectual disabilities and type 2 diabetes, which is the largest funded trial internationally for health behaviour intervention among this population. She also supports teaching delivery for the PGT Positive Behaviour Support program and contributes to the supervision of MVLS Postgraduate courses, including MSc Global Mental Health and MSc Public Health. As the co-lead for Mental Health Well-being, Maria is involved with Early Career Researchers and has received various project fundings from NIHR and ESRC, focusing on intellectual disabilities and their challenges related to chronic health conditions and family carer support.
