Mariagrazia Uguccioni received her degree in Medicine from the University of Bologna and specialized in Haematology in 1994. From 1993 to 2000, she was a member of the Theodor Kocher Institute at the University of Bern, and in 2000, she became a group leader at IRB and was appointed vice-director in 2010. In 2016, she was nominated as an extraordinary professor at the Medical Faculty of Humanitas University in Milan and was elected a member of the Bologna Academy of Science in 2009. Her research focuses on the relevance of chemokines in human pathology, with a keen interest in chemokine expression and activities under normal and pathological conditions, leukocyte activation and traffic, and natural chemokine antagonists as well as synergy-inducing chemokines. Her group continues to investigate chemokine activities in human inflammatory diseases, tumors, and infections, dissecting the mechanisms that lead to chemokine synergism in leukocytes and the modifications occurring in leukocytes of patients with chronic inflammatory conditions, which can lead to the dysfunction of chemokine receptors.
