Mariam’s research explores gender inequalities in employment, work, and family life with a specific focus on the Middle East and North Africa. A large portion of her work assesses the forms of capital—economic, cultural, social—and how they intersect to influence power relations within families and labor market inequalities. Her PhD work provided insights into the mechanisms that maintain and reproduce gender inequalities in contemporary Egypt across key life stages such as adolescence, marriage, and parenthood. Mariam has also extended her research to include Western contexts, specifically examining the experiences of women and children within the family justice system in England. Her current UK-funded work explores the interactions of teenage mothers with the family justice system, investigating patterns of repeated court appearances and the risks of parental rights being terminated and adoption. This project utilizes new data-sharing collaborations with the Ministry of Justice and the Children and Family Court Advisory Support Service. Mariam is open to co-supervising projects that relate to her research interests and primarily utilizes quantitative methods.
