Dr. Marian Chertow

Biography

Marian Chertow is the Manufacturer's Association Professor Emeritus in Industrial Ecology at Yale University, where she serves as Director of the Center for Industrial Ecology. With a significant academic background and experience, she has taught at Yale and was part of the founding faculty for the Master's program in Environmental Management at the National University of Singapore. Her research primarily focuses on industrial ecology, circular economy, and waste management, particularly the study of industrial symbiosis, which involves geographically based exchanges of materials, energy, and water among businesses globally. Professor Chertow has received multiple awards from the U.S. EPA and was inducted into the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame. She holds an active role in advising organizations such as Trane Technologies, and serves on multiple boards, including TerraCycle Inc. Throughout her career, she has led various international collaborations aimed at advancing the field of industrial ecology and its applications in developing countries and urban settings. Her commitment to education includes developing, teaching, and overseeing advanced courses at Yale and in executive programs worldwide. Chertow continues to engage in research that transforms industrial practices towards sustainability, leveraging her extensive expertise and leadership in the field.
