Biography

Marian Jago obtained a BA from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada, an MA in Musicology and a PhD in Ethnomusicology from York University in Toronto, Canada. Her work involves archival research, ethnographic inquiry, and pedagogical practices. Jago's research focuses on jazz improvisation pedagogy, particularly the works of Lee Konitz and Lennie Tristano, and she has published in the Journal of Jazz Studies and the Jazz Research Journal. Her work on Canadian jazz co-operatives has been published by the University of British Columbia Press. In addition to her continuing work in jazz studies, she lectures on Popular Music, emphasizing the intersections of race and gender in popular music performance and reception. Jago has a particular interest in mid-20th-century American Blues and Soul, the influence of hip-hop as a form of musical resistance within Indigenous communities, and the career of Bruce Springsteen. Her teaching and research additionally explore music culture, music technology, and their intersections with various facets of popular culture, including film, television, and design. Jago is the editor of the journal Jazz Perspectives and serves on the board of directors for the Scottish Jazz Archive.
