Biography

Mariana Atkins is an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia’s Business School, specializing in human geography and planning. Her research focuses on evaluation projects in areas such as financial resilience, disaster preparedness, ageing, aged care, homelessness, unemployment, and disability. With experience working in the Department of Geography from 2013 to 2018, she continued at the Centre for Social Impact (CSI UWA) from 2018 to 2025. She has taught various units in Geography and Planning and has significant experience in research initiatives in developing countries. She holds a PhD in Geography Planning from the University of Western Australia, an MSc (Distinction) in Social Policy Planning from the London School of Economics, and a BA (Hons) in Geography from University College London. Additionally, Mariana is a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society and serves as a board member for PerthALIVE and ADFAS Perth, while also mentoring for CANWA. Her research interests intersect with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, notably focusing on issues related to ageing and community engagement.
