Biography

Marianne Govers Hopman holds a Ph.D. in Classical Philology from Harvard University and has expertise in ancient Greek culture, particularly in archaic classical poetry. Her literary interests include feminist studies, animal studies, posthumanism, and environmental humanities. She is the author of 'Scylla: Myth, Metaphor, Paradox' published by Cambridge University Press in 2012 and has co-edited 'Choral Mediations in Greek Tragedy' in 2013. Professor Hopman has contributed articles on Homer, Athenian tragedy, and Greek hymns, and she is currently working on a book project titled 'Prometheus’ Gifts: Environment Technology in Fifth-Century Athens,' which explores how classic environmental humanities can provide contemporary insights into fifth-century BCE tragedy, especially in relation to human innovation and the environment. She served as the chair of the Classics Department at Northwestern University from 2018 to 2022 and directed the French Interdisciplinary Group from 2012 to 2017. Her academic honors include the John J. Winkler Memorial Prize and a grant from the Loeb Classical Library Foundation. In 2015, she was appointed as Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques by the French Ministry of Culture. At Northwestern, she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on topics such as Homer, Athenian tragedy, and ancient love poetry, encouraging students to engage critically with the ancient past and its relevance to contemporary issues.
